Ashamed

I feel ashamed
’I've not told any of my friends that my parents are separated. It's too embarrassing. I pretend my dad is at work if anyone comes over. I'm afraid they'll tease me. It feels like our family is not a proper family any more.’
Raju, 11

You may feel ashamed because you think your family isn't like other families any more. Maybe you feel you can't bring your friends home to play because your parents will row, or because your dad isn't there.

A lot of children in your situation feel like you. But you really don't have to. There is absolutely nothing to feel ashamed about.

Talk magic
If you hold this feeling inside, it will grow bigger and bigger and make you really unhappy. You may feel like you just want to disappear.

Feeling better
It's a good idea to talk to someone you trust about how you feel (It could be Mum, Dad, a friend, anyone close to you). Talking helps you to feel better and they will help you to see that there is no need to be ashamed.

Remember, it’s not your fault.
